Dragons are mythical reptilian creatures of fearsome appearance that feature in many ancient cultures. In Western folklore it is portrayed as a malevolent winged beast that breathes fire. In the Eastern tradition, however, the serpentine-shaped dragon is a benevolent symbol of power and good fortune. Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
