The Design That Came to Define American Silver
Struck from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar features Liberty striding toward the sunrise on the obverse and a majestic eagle on the reverse. Adolph Weinman’s design is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in U.S. coinage and was later revived for the Silver American Eagle.
Weinman’s Walking Liberty circulated through both World Wars before being retired in 1948. Decades later, the U.S. Mint revived the obverse for the modern Silver American Eagle — making the original 1916–1947 issues the historical ancestor of every Silver Eagle struck today.
