Your Questions, Answered
Buying silver the smart way starts here.
From first-time stackers comparing American Eagles and Maple Leafs to collectors hunting graded Morgan Dollars, these are the questions our specialists field most often — covering purity, the gold-to-silver ratio, pre-1965 90% silver, premiums, storage, and our buy-back commitment.
Why buy silver right now?
Silver is both a monetary metal and an industrial one — it carries the same store-of-value characteristics as gold while also drawing demand from solar, electronics, and medical applications. At a lower entry price per ounce than gold, it’s the most accessible way to begin a precious metals position.
Many investors track the gold-to-silver ratio (the number of silver ounces it takes to buy one ounce of gold) to gauge whether silver is historically cheap or expensive relative to gold. Call us at 888-506-6439 for the latest read.

What's the difference between .999 and .9999 fine silver?
.999 fine means 99.9% pure silver. This is the standard for the U.S. Mint Silver American Eagle, Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, and most American silver bullion. .9999 fine means 99.99% pure — the Royal Mint Silver Britannia and certain newer issues are struck to this slightly higher standard.
For investment purposes, both meet IRA purity requirements (.999+) and behave identically in the market. The difference is craftsmanship and refining; it does not meaningfully change resale value.

What is pre-1965 90% silver U.S. coinage?
Before 1965, U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars were struck in 90% silver, 10% copper. These circulating coins — Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, the 1964 Kennedy half, and the Morgan Dollar series — carry both intrinsic silver value and historic numismatic appeal.
Because their fineness sits below the .999 IRA threshold, they are not IRA-eligible. They are popular with collectors and investors who want a tangible link to American monetary history alongside their silver content.

Which silver coins and bars are IRA-approved?
The IRS requires silver held in a Precious Metals IRA to be at least .999 fine and produced by an approved mint or refiner. On this page, every product showing the IRA Eligible badge meets these requirements — including Silver American Eagles (bullion and proof), Canadian Maple Leafs, Britannias, the Defender of Liberty, the Victoria Cross 2026, Rose Crown Guinea, Four Nation, America the Beautiful, generic rounds, and LBMA-approved silver bars.
Pre-1965 90% silver coins (Morgans, Walking Liberty, Franklin, 1964 Kennedy) are not IRA-eligible because their fineness falls below the threshold.

Does my state charge sales tax on silver?
Sales tax on precious metals varies by state — many states exempt investment-grade silver entirely, while others tax purchases under a certain dollar threshold or tax certain product categories (numismatic vs. bullion). A handful of states still apply standard sales tax.
Our specialists can confirm the current rules for your state before you place an order. IRA purchases are not subject to sales tax, since the metal is delivered directly to an IRS-approved depository.

How is my silver delivered or stored?
Direct purchases ship fully insured via FedEx or USPS Registered Mail, with adult-signature delivery and tracking provided. Silver is heavier per dollar than gold, so larger orders may ship in multiple cartons.
IRA purchases are stored at an IRS-approved depository on your behalf — typically Delaware Depository, Brink’s, or International Depository Services. You retain full ownership; the depository handles segregated or non-segregated storage based on your preference.

What is the premium over the silver spot price?
Silver premiums tend to be higher in percentage terms than gold premiums because production and shipping costs are a larger share of each ounce. Generic rounds and LBMA bars typically carry the lowest premiums. Government-issued bullion coins — American Eagles, Maple Leafs, Britannias — run higher, and graded numismatic pieces (Morgan Dollars in MS-63, for example) carry the highest.
Premiums also fluctuate with mint availability. Call us for a live quote on any product on this page.
