Silver Rally Accelerates: Market Nears $40 as Dollar Weakens and Deficit Deepens

Silver is closing in on $40 an ounce for the first time since 2011. A tightening supply, a weaker dollar, and rising industrial demand are pushing prices higher.

The price of silver is climbing fast, getting closer to $40 per ounce for the first time since 2011, as supply tightens, the U.S. dollar loses value, and global demand for silver continues to grow.

On Wednesday, silver futures contracts traded at $39.85 per ounce, while the price of silver in live markets (known as “spot silver”) reached $39.40 per ounce. That’s the highest price in nearly 14 years. So far in 2025, silver is up 36%, which is more than gold’s 31% gain. Gold recently hit $3,451 per ounce.

This strong rally is making more Americans pay attention. For years, silver has been in the shadow of gold. But now, many experts believe silver has much more room to grow, and that it may be one of the smartest ways to shield your money in today’s uncertain economy.

Silver Is Rising Even While Stocks Are Booming

What’s surprising about silver’s rise is that it’s happening while the stock market is also hitting record highs. Usually, when stocks are doing well, wealth-haven assets like silver and gold cool off. But this time, both are going up together. That’s a sign that something deeper may be going on.

Many investors are nervous about rising government debt, inflation, and possible trouble in the global economy. They’re buying silver and gold not just as investments, but as a shield. At the same time, the U.S. dollar is weakening, and interest rates on government bonds are falling, making precious metals more attractive.

Other metals like copper are also climbing, partly due to rising demand and fears about trade disruptions between the U.S. and other countries. These conditions are helping lift silver even higher.

A Serious Shortage in Silver Supply

One of the biggest reasons silver is rising is because there just isn’t enough of it. The global silver market is now expected to have a supply shortage for the fifth year in a row. That means more people and companies want silver than there is available.

Why is demand so high? Because silver isn’t just a precious metal, it’s also used in many industries. It’s a key ingredient in solar panels, electric vehicles, medical tools, and artificial intelligence technology. As these industries grow, so does their need for silver.

Meanwhile, silver mining hasn’t kept up. And new tariffs on metals, like a 50% tax on imported copper set to start August 1, have made things worse. Even though silver wasn’t included in that tariff, the market is reacting as if it could be affected. As a result, borrowing and storage costs for silver have gone up, making the supply even tighter.

Why Silver Could Still Be Cheap Compared to Gold

Even after its big gains this year, silver still hasn’t hit its all-time high of $49 per ounce, which happened in 2011. Gold, on the other hand, broke its record earlier this year.

That’s where the gold-to-silver ratio comes in. This ratio shows how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. Right now, the ratio is 88 to 1. Historically, the average has been closer to 60 to 1. The higher the ratio, the cheaper silver is compared to gold.

In the past, when this ratio climbed above 80, silver prices later skyrocketed, sometimes gaining as much as 300% or even 400%. That’s why many believe silver could have much more room to grow.

Investors Are Buying Silver Funds and Stocks

As interest in silver grows, many investors are putting money into funds that track silver or companies that mine it. One of the most popular options is the Sprott Silver Miners & Physical Silver ETF (SLVR). It’s the only investment fund of its kind that includes both physical silver and silver mining companies.

This fund owns silver from the Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV) and major mining stocks like First Majestic Silver, Endeavour Silver, and Aya Gold & Silver. These companies often gain more than the price of silver itself when the market is going up.

What makes silver mining stocks attractive right now is that they benefit in two ways: silver prices are rising, and demand for industrial silver is booming. And because it’s getting harder to find and produce new silver, these companies may continue to perform well in the years ahead.

Where Prices Could Be Headed

Experts are now predicting silver could break past $40 per ounce soon. Some see it going even higher by the end of the year, possibly $42. Others say it might briefly dip to around $35 before climbing as high as $45 in 2026.

With the U.S. government debt now over $37 trillion, the value of the dollar falling, and rising concerns about inflation, many investors are looking for ways to protect their savings. For many, silver is becoming the go-to option.

It’s cheaper than gold, widely used in the real world, and historically performs well when the dollar is weak and inflation rises.

What It Means for Everyday Americans

The current silver rally isn’t just about traders or wealthy investors. It’s a sign that people are starting to lose confidence in traditional financial systems. Whether you’re worried about the economy, your retirement, or just want something real in your portfolio, silver is becoming a more popular choice.

And with demand rising and supply shrinking, some experts believe we could see silver set new records, possibly within the next year.
